Psychotherapy

If you are new to seeking psychotherapy, I know the process can be confusing and fearful.  You will read below the philosophy and scope of my practice.  There will likely be many questions that remain unanswered after reading the information.  Please do not hesitate to contact me for a free phone consultation.  I am happy to guide you in finding the best psychotherapy services for your needs, whether it is with me or with another psychotherapist.

Philosophy

I believe that the ultimate goal of therapy is to alleviate pain and suffering, and that everyone has the capacity for growth and change.  By developing a caring, empathic, and trusting relationship with my clients, it becomes possible for you to gain insight and clarity about relationships, problems and personal patterns. It is through this process that growth and change can be made and peace and contentment realized.

I see the clients I work with through the lens of multiple personal identities (e.g., gender, sexual orientation) and cultural identities (e.g., race/ethnicity, nationality, language).  It is by acknowledging and working with these realities in therapy that positive and genuine growth is possible.

In terms of theoretical orientation, I largely base my understanding of client issues on interpersonal and psychodynamictheories.  That means that I believe current and past relationships (including the relationship between the therapist and the client) are important material to understand and work with.  Additionally, I am eclectic in my therapeutic work, meaning I will often adopt techniques and interventions from other theoretical traditions in working with my clients.  These may include mindfulness and cognitive behavioral techniques.

Scope of Practice

I primarily work with adolescents and adults in an individual psychotherapy setting.  However, with certain presenting concerns, I will also work with couples and families.

In terms of psychological testing, I am available to address specific and targeted concerns, or broader issues requiring more comprehensive assessments.  These include personality, clinical diagnosis, academic achievement, vocational, and intelligence testing.

Cultural and Language Competency

In addition to English, I am proficient in Mandarin and can understand 3 other Chinese dialects (Hakka, Hokkien/Taiwanese, and Cantonese). Having lived internationally (Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Taiwan, and U.S.) for significant periods of my life, I am particular sensitive to cultural and identity issues.
